elderly moon and gulls
The old moon is verging on new again. Some gulls flew in front of it early yesterday morning. It's getting harder to photograph this because of the morning light washing it out. I find myself distracted by the orbital geometry of the moon and sun and Earth--the closer the moon is directionally to the sun, the more of it is in shadow. It's so obvious once you know what's going on, but what a challenge to figure that out in the first place.

Chalmers Captivity Day
We celebrated the 11th anniversary of Chalmers Captivity Day, which commemorates the occasion when Rachel lured him off the streets of Detroit with a bucket of barbecued ribs--by letting him run off-leash in Marin County.

San Francisco ice
While people in New York are wearing bathing suits in January, it went below freezing in San Francisco. This photo is nothing to write home about (indeed, you may confuse it with a picture of some moon of Jupiter), but it is documentary evidence of our frosty state.

crescent moon
The crescent moon on 1.12.2007. The cold San Francisco weather has meant some great clarity for these moonshots. Plus I'm temporarily obsessed. Shot at F/4.5 at 1/200 sec at ISO 100.

red-tailed hawk
A red-tailed hawk in the neighborhood. It was flying with a juvenile--perhaps its offspring?

Three moons
Three versions of the same photo of the moon. The top is processed from the raw image. The middle is processed from the JPEG. The bottom is the unedited JPEG. From a distance, the top two are indistinguishable, but up close, the middle has color speckles and less detail. The bottom one shows the foggy haze.

Townsend's warbler
They're usually up in the trees, but I found one at my level flitting about the San Francisco Zoo. Of about 25 shots, only two weren't blurred--these guys hop around a lot.
