spinning self-portrait
Here I'm riding on the surprisingly smooth rotating pole at the new playground at sunset.

Lenore and Stephen
We cracked out the Play-Doh last night. The fruits of our labor: Lenore (a fictional being), left, by Stephen, and Stephen, right, by Rachel.

road tripper
Levi and I rode with some friends to the Ferry Building. In the background is the Oakland Bay Bridge.

green flash
This was the last sliver of sun as it set at 6:48 p.m. 10/6/2007. It really does turn green. (not a great image--long lens, low light, high ISO)

Levi's first written word
Levi wrote these letters at Stephen's suggestion, 10/2007. His repertoire is pretty limited, but good enough for "MOM."

Rachel's fancy shoes
You'd better like these, because I invested about 1 hour in advising Rachel about various options. That was about a 20th what she spent actually trying and buying options.

Burdens of parenthood
I generally take a heavy pack so Rachel can carry Levi, so everybody gives me guff for pictures where Rachel has both. But guess whose shoulders he wanted to ride on during the last trip? The extra 30+ pounds wasn't bad, except that squished between my pack and me, he's lean forward and make me bend my neck more than was pleasant after awhile

Ogham stone
For readers of the Celtic Riddle, a somewhat cheesy archaeological murder mystery, this is an Ogham stone on Dingle Peninsula on Ireland. The hatch marks are essentially runes, based on the Roman alphabet.

Rachel whooping it up (down?)
Rachel and Levi had a gas running down this steep gravel path on the side of Cinder Cone in Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park last weekend.

Levi's eggplants
One of his favorite things to draw are eggplants. (Rachel colored them.) Other favorite subjects are footballs, balloon strings, kite-tail bows, and glasses.

I still miss the yellow, red and green color scheme, but the orange is finally starting to seem OK.

motion blur 3
This time the lines look more like a skein of distorted sine waves. Enough of this silliness.
motion blur 2
More studies of wheels in motion. More counterintuitive almost-straight line, this time forming a lattice.
motion blur 1
I've grown fixated on trying to capture the peculiar light patterns of wheels in motion. It fascinates me that such straight lines can result from rotating wheels viewed from the frame of reference of the ground. I'm reminded of the old physics view that a rotating wheel, observed in the instant from the ground's perspective, appears to be rotating about the point of contact with the ground, where the wheel's velocity is zero. The hub is moving at the velocity of the car, the top at twice that velocity.
a goofy literary moment
He's growing fonder, if possible, of reading, and I'm growing fonder, if possible, of him.

fore-and-aft rig
Rachel sings, "This old man, he played one, birds migrate to follow the sun..." An excerpt from what Levi calls the Butterfly Song.

1bdrm fxr uppr, $525K
A house a couple blocks away collapsed when it fell off its jacks while the owners were laying a new foundation. Thoughtful contractors, willing to lend a hand, stuck their business cards in the pile of gravel out front. This was a one-bedroom, 870-square-foot cottage that sold for the obscenely low price $525,000 last year. One corner of the house poked into the neighbors to the east, while the other corner slewed over into a narrow mini-park.

jumping spider
I love these little guys. I once saw one jump and catch a fly in midair. It was tethered by a silk thread.

martial artist
In this photo, Levi is about to leap into the air to fend off a ninja attacking me from behind. For you martial-arts experts, he's in the Siamese upholstery-claw position.
long-billed curlew
A long-billed curlew flies above Stinson Beach. I thought it was a whimbrel but I was led astray by Sibley.
