World Cup at Kezar Pub
Germany defeated Sweden 2-0 on Saturday, May 24, and I watched starting at 8 a.m. at Kezar Pub next to Golden Gate Park. Top photo: German fans root during a corner kick. Middle: Swedish fan ecstatic when Sweden is awarded a penalty kick. Bottom photo: German fans ecstatic when Sweden misses the kick.

bug
According to my ever-broading insect knowledge, this is a bug. No, really--there are a group of bugs that are formally called bugs--those of the Hemiptera order. Perhaps this is Ilnacora malina aka the green plant bug, but I sure as heck don't know. Somewhere in the miridae family, that's for sure.
fern spore capsules
OK, bear with me, this is complicated. Spore capsules--there are several in each of these little circles on the underside of these backlit fern fronds--release spores. The spores blow around and germinate into a heart-shaped plant called a prothallus. The prothallus actually has the sex organs, and the sperm fertilizes the egg there. At that point, roots and leaves grow from the prothallus into a fern proper.

The truth shall make you free.
If you can deal with the traffic at City College of San Francisco. I think that's an observatory on the right. I can think of few worse cities for stargazing.

aerial dogfight
A starling attacked a raven midair over the Monterey Safeway. Note that the raven is upside-down.
future prom dates
Levi and Carly gaze into each others' eyes in front of St. Mark's Church. I was tootling them around while Rachel and Allyson engaged in nanny negotiations.

banana slug
My high school girlfriend's mom studied some chemical aspects of mating banana slugs, which was the first I'd heard of them. They are aptly named.
ladybug
A convergent ladybug in Tilden Park. It entertains me that people find this bug cute but most others repulsive. It's clearly a case of cultural conditioning -- nuture vs. nature, har har har. These aren't good for controlling aphids in your garden, apparently, because they just fly away.
vivid dancer damselfly
I can confidently say this is a vivid dancer. I thought these were a type of dragonfly, but the bug book overruled me and thus it's categorized damselfly.
Levi points
Levi has begun pointing, sometimes in random directions and often saying "daa." Aunt Susanna holds him, Andre to the right.
